Jet Streaks
Go to the Side Legend in the Display Window. Uncheck the box next to the
65 m/s wind speed and the Wind Barbs, check the box next to Upward Motion.
Then move ahead to 18z (1 PM EST) on January 30th by hitting the next image button
of the toolbar twice (next to the play button in the top right corner of the display
window). The image should have an isosurface
of 75 m/s winds (magenta) and upward motion (yellow) and should appear like Figure
4. Pay close attention to the areas of upward motion circled in blue because
these areas support the development of storm systems. These regions of upward
motion are due to an imbalance between the pressure
gradient acceleration and coriolis
acceleration at the entrance and exit region of the jet
streak .
